Portrait of Gilberto Agostinho

Gilberto Agostinho is a Brazilian composer based in London, holding a PhD in Music from City, University of London. His work focuses on algorithmic composition, with research interests spanning automatic score generation, repetition and perception, musical mapping, and generative techniques. He is particularly drawn to linear algorithmic processes that, when rigorously applied, result in music that is perceptually ambiguous.

Agostinho has created algorithmic works for a wide range of instruments and ensembles, from solo piano pieces to orchestral compositions, as well as electroacoustic works. Central to his practice is the use of probabilistic and generative methods, through which he develops custom computer programs that autonomously produce complete works. For instrumental music, these programs generate performance-ready scores without the need for manual intervention.
