The Design of Note-Based Algorithmic Systems Through the Use of Mental Models (2025)
Selected PhD thesis abstract for Leonardo Graduate Abstracts: Top-Rated LABS Abstracts 2024.
Leonardo Graduate Abstracts (LGA) is an evolving international and interdisciplinary peer-review database of dissertation and thesis abstracts (PhD, MFA, and Master’s) that deal with topics at the intersections of art, science, and technology. Artists and scholars who have received advanced degrees in the arts (visual, sound, performing, and text), sciences, computer sciences, and/or technology and who investigate theoretical, historical, critical, and/ or practice-based engagements of science and/or technology with the arts are invited to submit an abstract of their dissertation or thesis for publication consideration in this peer-review database.
In addition to being published in the Leonardo Graduate Abstracts database, a selection of top abstracts chosen by a peer-review panel is published annually in the Leonardo journal and in the Leonardo newsletter. The authors of these abstracts names, as well as the titles of their dissertations and theses, are listed on the LGA website. Authors of abstracts most highly ranked by the panel are also invited to submit an article for publication consideration in the journal.

The Design of Note-Based Algorithmic Systems Through the Use of Mental Models (2021)
PhD Thesis
This practice-based research, which consists of this thesis, a portfolio of compositions, and a programming library for Python, explores the role played by metaphors and mental models in providing a framework for algorithmic composers to operate within. When working with algorithms, the composer approaches the act of music creation through an algorithmic lens which, in turn, can often suggest specific compositional ideas. To put it simply, in order to compose with algorithms, the composer must think algorithmically, which, in turn, affects how they conceive their musical ideas in the first place. We are shaped by our tools.
This research argues that this algorithmic musical thinking is often realised with the aid of metaphors and mental models. These cognitive mechanisms are crucially important not only for algorithmic conceptualisation but also for their potential to suggest specific ways of organising and manipulating algorithmic ideas, directly influencing the final artwork. As such, this work presents a novel way of approaching algorithmic composition, one in which the composer is consciously designing specific (and possibly idiosyncratic) mental models. From this perspective, composition becomes an investigation of the potentials of these mental models, aligning itself with the notion that algorithmic music can serve as a form of exploration to reach musical results not entirely planned a priori.
This approach is utilised throughout the accompanying portfolio of compositions, which is also analysed in this thesis. The mental models employed in these compositions—particularly those involving musical repetition—are connected to a specific set of aesthetic concepts that underpins this research. The accompanying programming library, Auxjad, provides classes and functions written in Python that directly implement these specific mental models. This library is publicly available online under a permissive free software license, allowing other composers to adapt and incorporate its code into their own practices.

Digitální technologie v hudební tvorbě pro akustické nástroje (2017)
[Digital Technology in Musical Creation for Acoustic Instruments]. Book.
První část knihy tvoří práce Jakuba Rataje Převod pohybu lidského těla na zvuk pomocí senzorů. Ta pojednává o průniku dvou rozdílných kompozičních přístupů (real time technologie a instrumentální kompozice) v autorově vlastním díle – hudebně-tanečním představení Umění Manipulace. První kapitola popisuje historický vývoj senzorické technologie v oblasti hudby a tance a zabývá se rolí tanečníka coby hudebního interpreta a s tím spojenými technologickými aspekty.
Hlavní pozornost věnuje vytváření akustického hudebního díla pomocí algoritmických postupů, zejména automatickému generování hudebních partitur a estetickým důsledkům spojeným s tímto druhem přístupu.

Dotknout se zvuku (2015)
[Touching Sound]. Article.
Šest nově vyvinutých autorských hudebních nástrojů představuje nové kompozičně interpretační situace mezi hudbou a technologií. Fascinace technologií ustupuje do pozadí, tématem se stále více stává hledání tradiční instrumentální zdatnosti, přirozené muzikality a kompoziční rozvahy, kterým technologie v současné hudbě dává nové obrysy. Michal Rataj představuje gestickou hudební interakci s grafi ckým tabletem, Daniel Bartoš popisuje bezdotykové ovládání nového typu senzoru Leap Motion při elektroakustické improvizaci na hudební nástroj, Jan Trojan rozeznívá pohybem ruky interaktivní plát plechu, Jakub Rataj ukazuje, jakým způsobem se tanečník může stát součástí hudebního ansámblu, Matouš Hejl popisuje stochasticky se chovající sestavu elektromagnetických bicích nástrojů a Gilberto Agostinho předvádí svůj koncept interaktivního binaurálního akusmonia, v němž se zvukové prostředí ve sluchátkách proměňuje v závislosti na pohybu posluchačů.
